The company operates through four business segments: Rail North America, Rail International, American Steamship Co. and Portfolio Management. The Rail North America segment is comprised of GATX's wholly-owned operations in the U. S., Canada and Mexico. It leases tank cars, freight cars and locomotives in North America and Europe. The Rail International segment operates in chemical, petroleum, food, agricultural, construction and other industries. The American Steamship Co. segment operates fleet on the Great Lakes, providing waterborne transportation of dry bulk commodities primarily for customers in the steel, electric utility and construction industries. The Portfolio Management segment focuses on maximizing the value of its existing portfolio of wholly-owned and managed assets. The company was founded in 1898 and is headquartered in Chicago, IL.
