Company Description

International Shipholding Corp. operates a diversified fleet of U.S. and International Flag vessels that provides international and domestic maritime transportation services to commercial and governmental customers primarily under medium to long-term time charters or contracts of affreightment. The company operates its business through six segments: Jones Act, Pure Car Truck Carriers, Dry Bulk Carriers, Rail-Ferry, Specialty Contracts and Other. The Jones Act segment deploys bulk Carriers, integrated tug-barge units, each consisting of a tug and a barge, and a harbor tug; a conveyor belt-equipped, self-unloading coal carrier to transport coal, under a time charter; and a vessel that transports molten sulphur under a contract of affreightment. The Pure Car Truck Carriers segment deploys Pure Car/Truck Carriers, which includes U.S. Flag vessels and International Flag vessels. Its vessels transport all types of vehicles, from fully assembled passenger cars to construction machinery and equipment, allowing for the efficient loading of large numbers of vehicles on multiple internal decks. The Dry Bulk Carriers segment consists of dry bulk vessels, which carry a wide variety of cargoes, including iron ore, coal, agricultural, steel, chemical and forest products. The Rail-Ferry segment uses its Roll-on/Roll-off special purpose double-deck vessels, which carry loaded rail cars between the U.S. Gulf Coast and Mexico in regularly scheduled waterborne rail service. The Specialty Contracts segment includes container vessels which are on time charter to another shipping company; multi-purpose vessels, tankers, and container vessels which service to transport fuel and supplies for an Indonesian mining company; a time chartered multi-purpose vessel which is time chartered to a large industrial customer; and a multi-purpose ice strengthened vessel deployed in the spot market. The Other segment consists of operations that include ship and cargo charter brokerage and agency services provided to unaffiliated companies and its operating companies, and other specialized services provided to its operating subsidiaries. International Shipholding was founded by Niels F. Johnsen and Erik F. Johnsen in 1978 and is headquartered in Mobile, AL.
