Progressive Corp. is an insurance holding company that offers a number of personal and commercial property-casualty insurance products primarily related to motor vehicles. The company operates in four segments: Personal Lines, Commercial Auto, Other Indemnity and Service Businesses. The Personal Lines segment writes insurance for personal autos and recreational vehicles. This segment is comprised of both the agency and direct businesses. The Commercial Auto segment writes primary liability and physical damage insurance for automobiles and trucks owned by small businesses in the business auto, for-hire transportation, contractor, for-hire specialty, and tow markets. This segment is distributed through both the independent agency and direct channels. The Other Indemnity segment businesses manages the company's run-off businesses, including the run-off of its professional liability insurance for community banks. The Service Businesses segment provide insurance-related services, including processing CAIP business and serving as an agent for homeowners, general liability, and worker's compensation insurance through its programs with unaffiliated insurance companies. Progressive was founded by Peter Benjamin Lewis in 1965 and is headquartered in Mayfield Village, OH.
