Company Description

TransAlta Corp. is a wholesale power generator and marketer. It focuses on generating electricity in Canada, the United States and Australia through diversified portfolio of facilities fuelled by coal, natural gas, hydroelectric, wind and geothermal resources. The company operates through three business segments: Generation, Energy Trading and Corporate. The Generation Segment owns and operates hydro, wind, geothermal, natural gas and coal fired facilities, and related mining operations in Canada, the United States, and Australia. Generation's revenues are derived from the availability and production of electricity and steam as well as ancillary services such as system support. Starting in 2013, electricity sales generated by the Corporation's Commercial and Industrial group are assumed to be sourced from the Corporation's production and have been included in the Generation Segment on a net basis. The Energy Trading Segment derives revenue and earnings from the wholesale trading of electricity and other energy-related commodities and derivatives. Energy Trading is also responsible for recommending portfolio optimization decisions. The Corporate Segment provides finance, tax, treasury, legal, regulatory, environmental, health and safety, sustainable development, corporate communications, government and investor relations, information technology, risk management, human resources, internal audit, and other administrative support to the Generation and Energy Trading segments. TransAlta was founded in 1909 and is headquartered in Calgary, Canada.
