USEC, Inc. is a supplier of low enriched uranium for commercial nuclear power plants. The company operates through two reportable segments: Low Enriched Uranium and Contract Services. The Low Enriched Uranium segment consists of two components: separative work units (SWU) and uranium. The SWU is a standard unit of measurement that represents the effort required to transform a given amount of natural uranium into two components: enriched uranium having a higher percentage of the uranium-235 isotope and depleted uranium having a lower percentage of the uranium-235 isotope. The Contract Services segment consists of work performed for the United States Department of Energy and its contractors at the Portsmouth site and the Paducah gaseous diffusion plant. USEC was founded in October 1992 and is headquartered in Bethesda, MD.
