International Paper Company (International Paper) is a New York corporation, incorporated in 1941 as the successor to the New York Corporation of the same name organized in 1898. It is a global paper and packaging company that is complemented by North American merchant distribution system, with main markets and manufacturing operations in North America, Europe, Latin America, Russia, Asia and North Africa. For management and financial reporting purposes, the Company�s businesses are separated into six segments: Printing Papers; Industrial Packaging; Consumer Packaging; Distribution; Forest Products; and Specialty Businesses and Other. International Paper is a producer of uncoated printing and writing papers. Products in this segment include uncoated papers, market pulp and uncoated bristols. UNCOATED PAPERS: This business produces papers for use by commercial printers in copiers, desktop and laser printers and digital imaging. End-use applications include advertising and promotional materials such as brochures, pamphlets, greeting cards, books, annual reports and direct mail. Uncoated papers also produce a number of grades that are converted by its customers into envelopes, tablets, business forms and file folders. Uncoated papers are sold under private label and International Paper brand names that include Hammermill, Springhill, Williamsburg, Postmark, Accent, Great White, Ballet, Chamex and Rey. MARKET PULP: Market pulp is used in the manufacture of printing, writing and specialty papers, towel and tissue products and filtration products. These products are produced in the United States, France, Poland and Russia, and are sold around the world. International Paper facilities have annual dried pulp capacity of about 1.4 million tons. International Paper a manufacturer of containerboard in the United States with the integration of Weyerhaeuser Company�s packaging business. Production capacity is now about 11.0 million tons annually. The Company's products include linerboard, medium, whitetop, recycled linerboard, recycled medium and saturated kraft. About 80% of production is converted domestically into corrugated boxes and other packaging by 137 U.S. container plants. International Paper owns or manages approximately 200,000 acres of forestlands in the United States, mostly in the South. All lands are independently third-party certified under the operating standards of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFITM). Forest Products currently manages approximately 200,000 acres of forestlands in the United States. Operating results are driven by the timing and pricing of specific forestland tract sales. The Specialty Businesses and Other segment mainly included the operating results of the Arizona Chemical business as well as certain smaller businesses. The Arizona Chemical business was sold in February 2007. The Company sells paper, packaging products and other products directly to end users and converters, as well as through agents, resellers and paper distributors. International Paper owns a merchant distribution business that sells products made both by International Paper and by other companies making paper, paperboard, packaging and graphic arts supplies. Sales offices are located throughout the United States as well as internationally. Raw materials essential to International Paper�s businesses include wood fiber, purchased in the form of pulpwood, wood chips and old corrugated containers, and certain chemicals, including caustic soda, starch, and polyethylene. The Company's products compete with similar products produced by other forest products companies. It also competes in some instances, with companies in other industries and against substitutes for wood and wood-fiber products. International Paper�s operations are subject to U.S. and non-U.S. laws and regulations relating to the environment, health and safety.
