Software giant plans to take PCs to next level with new software

NEW YORK (CNNfn) -- Microsoft Corp. will reportedly introduce new software that blends the technology of the World Wide Web with its Windows 95 operating system, a move that would bring revolutionary change to personal computing.
The New York Times reported Monday that Microsoft want to use its strength in personal computing to capitalize on the booming Internet market.
The new software, which is expected to be distributed free to the public later this summer as part of the company's Internet Explorer Web browser, turns traditional desktop computing into global networking. In fact, the newspaper said Microsoft's new software abandons the standard style of creating and storing information as "files" placed in "folders" and gives each documents the capabilities of a Web page.
Every document would have the ability to contain images, audio and video, the newspaper said. Documents could also contain hyperlinks.
But while dramatic, the new software faces competition from Netscape Communications Corp., the dominant software provider on the Internet. The two companies compete head-to-head in the Web browser market.
