Automaker says as many as 500,000 vehicles may have transmission defects

DEARBORN, Mich. (CNNfn) -- Ford Motor Co. announced the recall of nearly 680,000 vehicles Wednesday, most due to of a possible transmission defect.
The vehicles affected include 1996-97 Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable and Lincoln Continental cars and certain 1996 Ford Windstar minivans. According to Ford, in 419,180 of those vehicles it is possible that the park mechanism may not prevent the vehicle from rolling even if the shift lever is placed in the "park" position.
Owners are being advised to always engage their parking brakes when leaving the vehicle unattended.
In addition, certain 1990-92 Ford Probe cars are being recalled because the motorized seat belt assemblies may wear out and become inoperative.
Approximately 248,515 vehicles are affected.
A total of 5,950 1997 F-Super-Duty trucks with motorhome basic chassis are being recalled because the insulation on some battery cables may have been damaged during the supplier's assembly process. The battery cable could develop a short, which could potentially ignite surrounding components.
Ford said another 5,000 1996 Taurus SHO passenger cars also are being recalled to replace fuel pressure regulators having diaphragms that potentially may rupture. If this were to occur, fuel leakage or engine damage could result because the leakage might cause a fire.
In addition, 1,300 1997 Ford F-150 trucks are being recalled to verify the proper installation of a brake pedal retainer clip installed on the service brake. Failure could cause a loss of braking without warning.
Owners of affected vehicles are being notified by Ford through first-class mail and requested to have their vehicles inspected and modified as appropriate by dealers.
