Airline to order 120 small aircraft worth an estimated $5.3 billion

NEW YORK (CNNfn) -- In a blow to Seattle-based aircraft giant Boeing Co., USAir has agreed to place an order with European consortium Airbus Industrie for up to 400 airplanes, Airbus said Wednesday.
The preliminary agreement includes 120 firm orders for A319, A320 and A321aircraft, which compete with Boeing's 737 line.
Analysts said while the list prices of the planes total about $5.3 billion, USAir will likely receive a discount along with generous financing from Airbus.
The order is the latest in a string from North American airlines. Airbus has firm orders for nearly 300 small jetliners from Northwest Airlines, Air Canada, America West Airlines and Federal Express Corp. The latest announcement is a setback not only for Boeing, but also for McDonnell Douglas Corp., which is looking for buyers for its 100-seat MD-95 plane.
