NEW YORK (CNNfn) - General Motors Corp. may create an executive position to oversee extending the automaker's development overseas as part of an international reorganization of the company.
GM officials at the Geneva Motor Show told USA Today that nothing has been finalized and the move could be years away.
But some form of reshuffling, intended to give GM more of a global focus, is inevitable, officials said.
"It's very clear this is going to happen," Peter Hanenberger, head of GM's international technical development told the paper. "The vision is clear. Someday we will become one world, one company."
The move would probably not happen until GM completes its initiative to use the same platforms, or chassis, to build similar-sized vehicles for various global markets. Currently, GM uses 16 platforms and hopes to bring that number down to seven.
The automaker has already taken steps to integrate its U.S. operations with its Opel subsidiary in Europe by making cars based on each other's designs.Back to top
