New PowerMac 6500 series boasts fastest microprocessor on the market
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) -- Apple Computer Inc. on Friday unveiled a new Power Macintosh with a 300 megahertz microprocessor, the fastest on the market today.
Other models in the line will feature chips ranging in speed from 225 MHz to 275 MHz. The company is attempting to jump start sales with the PowerMac series. Sales of its Performa line of computers have lagged and the line is being phased out.
Apple said the computers will be priced at about $2,000 for the slower models to about $3,000 for the top-of-the line computers, not including monitors.
The computers come with between 32MB and 64MB of RAM and either 3GB or 4GB hard drives and will have varying packages of software pre-installed.
The 6500/300 and 6500/275 are expected to be available in limited quantities this spring while the 225 MHz and 250 MHz are scheduled for immediate availability.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple showed the computers at a technology fair being held at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
Apple could use some good news. Recent rumors have been swirling that it is looking for a friendly merger partner. Oracle Corp. Chairman Larry Ellison has also said he is interested in getting buyers together to take over the company.
The company recently said it would cut 2,700 full-time employees and 1,400 contract workers as part of its latest restructuring plan. It lost $816 million in the fiscal year ended last September. Another quarterly loss is expected to be announced this month.
