Chief of Alta Vista software division leaves after company withdraws IPO

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The head of a Digital Equipment Corp.'s Alta Vista software division resigned on Labor Day after the company decided against taking the unit public, a company official confirmed Thursday.
Ilene Lang, a vice president at Digital, stepped down when the company reversed course and decided to withdraw an initial public offering for Alta Vista Internet Software Inc., said Dan Kaferle, a spokesman for Digital.
The unit produces one of the most heavily-used Internet search engines as well as software and firewall security products.
Digital decided to keep Alta Vista within its portfolio because it thought it would be better for customers, Kaferle said.
"Ilene did an excellent job in building the Alta Vista brand," Kaferle said. "It's part of Digital's overall Web-based enterprise computing strategy and it will continue to be."
After the decision, Digital split Alta Vista's 180 employees between sales and marketing under the direction of Bruce Claflin, and the products division under the lead of Harry Copperman. Lang reported to Claflin. Both Claflin and Copperman are senior vice presidents.
Kaferle declined to comment on whether Lang's changing role amounted to a demotion.
Lang was a senior vice president at Lotus Development Corp. when she joined Digital in November 1995.
