NEW YORK (CNNfn) - News Corp. has tapped former TV Guide editor Anthea Disney to head a new U.S. publishing unit combining HarperCollins Publishers and the company's U.S. magazine and online publishing businesses
As chairman and chief executive officer of News America Publishing Group, Disney will oversee the daily operations and new business development of HarperCollins, TV Guide, The Weekly Standard, and the TV Guide Entertainment Network.
The HarperCollins unit has been a financial sore point for News Corp. The organization, controlled by Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch, had to take an abnormal loss of $448 million in its net profit for the year due to restructuring of its HarperCollins publishing division.
News Corp. officials said Disney was chosen because she has proven leadership characteristics and was responsible for revitalizing TV Guide, one of News Corp.'s flagship publications.
"The opportunity to unite our U.S. publishing operations under one management structure will help us maintain our leadership in the book and magazine industries.
"The formation of the News America Publishing Group will lead to greater editorial excitement, new business opportunities and greater efficiencies and coordination," said Peter Chernin, News Corp.'s president and chief operating officer.
Disney joined News Corp. in 1990. Along with serving as editor-in-chief of TV Guide, Disney has headed the company's Delphi online unit and held the top spot at HarperCollins Publishers.
Disney came to News Corp. from The New York Times where she was deputy managing editor.Back to top
