Full-featured systems with new processor line priced under $1,800

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Intel Corp. dropped the price of the 233-megahertz version of its Pentium II microprocessor line Monday at the behest of computer makers that want to lower system prices.
Intel cut the price of the chip from $401 to $268. Intel spokesman Chuck Molloy said no other processor prices were reduced and that the company still intends to implement price cuts scheduled earlier for late January.
"It's a request from [computer makers] to enable them to put unprecedented performance into entry-level models," Molloy said.
Computers using the chip are now available for under $1,800. Compaq's Presario 4528, which features the 233-megahertz chip along with CD-ROM and other standard features, now retails for $1,798 with monitor.
