Manufacturer hopes adult entertainment will help sell disc players

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Twenty years after they were introduced laser discs remain a niche product, not because they are too expensive or hard to use, but because they are too wholesome.
Makers of digital video disc players, who are trying to push a whole new format into the home entertainment market, want to avoid that problem. Facing slow sales of DVD players one equipment manufacturer, Pioneer Electronics Inc., is turning to pornography to give the DVD market a boost.
Sony and Phillips refused to press X-rated titles when laser discs came out, but VHS videocassette recorders became a consumer hit thanks to a jump start from the adult entertainment business. Pioneer will try the latter approach with DVD, by pressing into discs pornographic titles put out by several distributors, CNN financial news has learned.
Among the distributors is Vivid Interactive, which has completed 80 DVD porn titles pressed by Pioneer and expects to release two more each week.
"Our main goal is to get into all of the music shops because the music shops have now found this as the ideal replacement for a very slack market they've had over the last year with very poor video rentals and no new music phenomenon coming out," said Vivid Interactive President Dave James.
Distributors say their most important customers are not adult sex stores. Their biggest customers are the big chains of mainstream retail America, according to Andy Green of Pleasure Productions.(167K WAV) or (167K AIFF)
Pioneer is not the only maker of DVD players pressing pornographic titles. Panasonic is already pressing soft core pornography for distributors in Japan and is widely expected to do the same in the U.S.
