Company has visions of controlling wide variety of market segments

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Seeking to extend its reach beyond personal computers, Intel Corp. unveiled plans Tuesday to put its chips in a broad range of networked devices.
The Santa Clara, Calif., chip giant unveiled the plans at its networking symposium in San Francisco.
Intel President and Chief Operating Officer Craig Barnett said the company hopes to increase the number of personal computers connected to the Internet and other networks by developing more of the products that actually tie the computers together.
"As we move toward a billion connected PCs, Intel will deliver networking solutions for balanced computing that address the unique needs of each segment as the customers' needs change and grow," he said.
Barnett said Intel has no desire to go after the high-end market currently dominated by companies like Cisco Systems Inc. Instead, he said the company wants to focus on the consumer and small-business segments that traditional networking companies have largely ignored.
One of the first segments Intel is going after will be home computer networks. Citing a recent study that says about 14 million consumers have more than one PC in their home, Barnett said Intel has a unique opportunity to provide the equipment that ties them together. To capture the market, Intel recently formed a home networking operation that will cater to the home market.
Intel already makes some networking products, such as ethernet cards that connect computers to corporate networks. Recent statistics show Intel has climbed to No. 2 in the ethernet card market behind 3Com Corp.
Intel is also starting to move into networking hardware, including switches and routers that move data from the Internet into corporate networks.
