Two Smith Barney execs accessed 'offensive' material via firm's computers

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Salomon Smith Barney has dismissed two executives, apparently on grounds that they were transmitting pornographic materials over the company's computer network.
Company spokesman Michael E. Schlein confirmed the Friday firings but did not identify the employees involved, the New York Times reported on Tuesday.
In a memo sent Monday to all employees, John Donnelly, the firm's managing director for human resources, said that the employees had violated Salomon Smith Barney policy forbidding use of the company's computers and telecommunications resources to transmit "offensive images or text such as pornography."
"Using firm facilities to communicate such offensive material is totally unacceptable and inconsistent with our insistence on professionalism and the mutually respectful environment we seek to promote," the memo continued. "Anyone engaging in such activity should assume that he or she will be terminated."
According to a company insider, two other employees had been involved in the misuse of Smith Barney's communications network, but have not been terminated at this time.
Salomon Smith Barney is the securities arm of Travelers Group Inc. (TRV).
