DOJ apparently wants more info from PC makers on Microsoft
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The U.S. Department of Justice has sent out another round of civil subpoenas to computer makers apparently regarding its investigation into Microsoft Corp.'s business practices.
A spokesman for Compaq Computer Corp. confirmed Friday the company recently received a second subpoena, or civil investigation demand, from the Justice Department. He would not comment, however, on what information the government was seeking or give details on exactly when the company received the subpoena.
Other computer makers could not be reached for confirmation but, according to online news service CNET, the subpoenas are part of a broader investigation into Microsoft (MSFT). Sources told the online new service the Justice Department is looking into the marketing of Windows NT, its activities in the market for Sun Microsystems Inc. (SUNW) Java and Microsoft's partnerships with Web sites.
This latest round of subpoenas comes at a time when the Justice Department is looking deeper into Microsoft's business practices.
In March, a federal judge granted Sun a preliminary injunction against Microsoft, preventing the software giant from using the "Java compatible" logo on its products.
A spokesman for Microsoft declined to confirm the issuance of new subpoenas but he said it is not surprising that the Justice Department would be seeking additional information.
A spokesman for the Justice Department declined to comment.
