Telecom equipment maker to outfit Baby Bell's network over next five years
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Canada's Northern Telecom Ltd. said Wednesday it has landed a contract worth more than $1.5 billion to provide network equipment over the next five years to SBC Communications Inc.
Nortel, which jockeys with Lucent Technologies Inc. for the top spot among telecom equipment makers, said the contract covers phone switching products, system upgrades and product conversions in SBC's seven-state region in the western United States.
"We are very pleased to foster such a strategic relationship with SBC to develop its network and deliver new services to customers,'' said Clarence J. Chandran, Nortel's president of public carrier networks.
'This is a big contract for Nortel," said spokeswoman Candace Inscoe, adding that it is among the largest contracts ever won by the company.
An SBC spokesman couldn't immediately be reached for comment early Wednesday, but Inscoe said the contract was put up for competitive bidding.
SBC, a growing San Antonio, Tex.-based regional Bell company, will use Nortel's DMS-100 digital switching equipment, hardware and software upgrades and conversion services.
Nortel shares (NT) closed down 5/16 at 64-15/16 on the New York Stock Exchange Tuesday. SBC shares (SBC) were off 7/16 at 37-9/16.
