Ford truck sales set record

June truck sales hit monthly high for any maker; car sales also gain slightly

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Buoyed by strong sales of its Ranger and F-Series lines, Ford Motor Co. Monday said Monday its June truck sales in the United States set an all-time monthly record for any manufacturer.
The No. 2 U.S. auto maker said it sold 242,906 trucks in June, a 16.3 percent increase from its June 1997 total of 200,857.
Ford (F) also said its June car sales in the United States rose 2.8 percent and light trucks climbed 18.1 percent from the same period last year.
June car sales were 167,593 compared with 156,715 in June 1997. Light truck sales were 241,781, up from 196,796 in the year-ago period.
Total unit sales for June rose 9.1 percent to 410,499 from 361,802 in the year-ago month.
For the first half of 1998, however, Ford said car sales slid 1.3 percent from a year earlier to 805,227 from 815,707. Truck sales for the period climbed 2.9 percent to 1,149,650 from 1,116,775.
The auto maker reported total unit sales of 1,969,173 for the first half of 1998, down 0.2 percent from the 1,973,276 in the year-ago period.
"Our inventories are right where we want them to be heading into the second half of the year," said Bob Rewey, Ford group vice president for marketing, sales and service.
Shares of Ford (F) rose 1-11/16 to 58-15/16 in Monday morning trading.
