Welding defect raises danger of breakage, suspension failure
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Subaru of America Inc. Friday announced plans to recall nearly 30,000 1996/97 Legacy cars due to improper welding on the vehicles' front suspension mounting assemblies.
The company said the defect could lead to the front suspension bracket becoming separated from its linkage, in turn causing suspension failure and potential loss of vehicle control.
Subaru -- a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. of Japan -- said 29,442 vehicles were being recalled, but Subaru did not say how many vehicles actually contained the defective welds.
All Legacy models sold in the United States are produced at Subaru's Lafayette, Ind., manufacturing plant.
The company has already notified registered owners of the potentially affected vehicles to return them to a Subaru dealer for inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the faulty assemblies.
