Illinois Medicare giant pleads guilty to eight counts of fraud, will pay $144M
|
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- One of the nation's largest Medicare carriers, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, pleaded guilty Thursday to eight felony fraud counts and agreed to pay $144 million.
The firm admitted that Health Care Service Corp., its subsidiary handling Medicare, concealed evidence of poor performance in processing Medicare claims for the federal government. The announcement was made by the Justice Department.
As part of the criminal plea, officials agreed to pay $4 million in criminal fines in federal court in East St. Louis, Ill. The $140 million civil settlement resolves the insurer's liability under federal law.
