Routine maintenance turns into 10-hour shutdown for online bookseller
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - What was supposed to be a routine four-hour shutdown to perform system maintenance turned into 10 hours of downtime for online bookseller Amazon.com Inc. Wednesday.
The company shut its web site down at 3 a.m. Eastern Wednesday, but was not able to get the site back up until 1 p.m. Amazon officials would not elaborate on what caused the disruption.
Amazon (AMZN) also declined to say how much business it would have typically brought in during the 10 hours.
During the outage, the company gave visitors the option to leave their e-mail addresses. Those who submitted their addresses will be offered a $5 gift certificate.
