Electronics maker to unveil voice command technology for Internet data
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Motorola Inc. apparently is set to unveil a new voice command technology that will enable telephone and computer users to more easily retrieve information off the Internet.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Motorola will introduce Wednesday a new programming language, called VoxML, or Voice Markup Language.
The Schaumburg, Ill., electronics company hopes corporate America will embrace VoxML and use it to write voice-activated software for pulling content from the Web.
If the product is successful, Motorola stands to boost its market share of phones, pagers and other products.
According to the Journal, the VoxML technology will enable companies to let consumers get such information as personal-banking records, weather forecasts and internal corporate information over phones and computers using voice commands.
Since VoxML is based on HTML, or hypertext markup language, that is the basis for most Internet content, Motorola said most Internet content developers can learn the technology in a couple of days.
Motorola is expected to distribute a software development kit for its technology, including examples of applications on its own Internet site, the Journal said.
Shares of Motorola (MOT) closed Tuesday at 44-9/16 on the New York Stock Exchange.
