Operations in England, Germany move online bookselling war abroad
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Amazon.com Inc. said Thursday it has launched operations in England and Germany, a move that should heat up the online bookselling war in Europe.
The Seattle-based company said the sites target the growing number of Web surfers in those countries.
The Amazon.uk site is based in Slough, England, and carries a catalog of 1.2 million U.K. titles; Amazon.de is based in Regensburg, Germany, and features 335,000 German titles.
The move comes one week after German media giant Bertelsmann AG said it agreed to take a 50-percent stake in barnesandnoble.com, giving Barnes & Noble Inc.'s (BKS) online bookselling unit a greater European presence.
Amazon (AMZN) shares climbed 3-7/16 to 96-15/16 in midday trading.
