Ministers chew over plan as mad cow fears fade, veterinary experts give nod
|
LONDON (CNNfn) - European Union officials have cleared the way for Britain to begin exporting its beef once more.
A majority of European Union veterinary experts voted in favor of resuming the export of British beef Wednesday.
Exports were suspended in 1996 on fears the beef might carry mad cow disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), which has links with the human brain-wasting illness Kreutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.
EU ministers now have the final say on lifting the ban. It is being replaced by a program under which beef from cattle aged between six and 30 months can be sold overseas.
Only a slim majority of the 15 veterinary experts voted in favor of relaxing the restrictions on British beef, so the ban can't be lifted without a vote from the ministers.
