Companies join forces to offer wireless data services
|
SAN DIEGO, Ca., (CNNfn) - Qualcomm and Microsoft today announced a strategic partnership that may help define the future of wireless data services, particularly mobile internet access.
The two companies announced the formation of a new equally owned joint venture called WirelessKnowledge LLC.
The company hopes to give customers wireless access to the Internet and individual business networks from desktop and laptop computers running any of the Windows operating systems, digital phones, Smart Phones, pagers and Web access terminals, such as Kiosks and Smart TVs.
WirelessKnowledge, to be based in San Diego, will be headed by John Major, who previously served as executive vice president of Qualcomm and president of its wireless infrastructure business.
San Diego-based Qualcomm [QCOM] and Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft [MSFT] said they formed the venture to help bridge the computing and communications industries.
WirelessKnowledge will look to develop strategic partnerships with wireless carriers such as AT&T Wireless Services, Bell Atlantic Mobile, GTE Wireless, and Sprint PCS, according to the company..
"Increasingly powerful mobile telephones and computers and WirelessKnowledge services will together enable millions of consumers to access a rich variety of information any time, anyplace," said Qualcomm Chief executive officer and chairman Irwin Jacobs."
Qualcomm closed at 56-7/8, up 1/4 while Microsoft closed at 112 1/16, up 1-3/8 on Tuesday.
