Winfrey's HARPO joins two partners to form new women's network
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Oxygen Media said Tuesday it was partnering with Oprah Winfrey's HARPO Entertainment Group and television producers Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner and Caryn Mandabach to launch a new cable network for women.
The new network will be integrated with Oxygen's online properties serving women. Both Casey-Werner-Mandabach, a newly formed entity, and HARPO will be investing in Oxygen Media.
Oxygen Media said the new women's cable network, Oxygen, has signed its first major service agreement with TCI, which has guaranteed to deliver the new network 7 million subscribers.
Geraldine Laybourne, chairman and chief executive officer of Oxygen Media, said the 24-hour, 7-day-a-week network will feature a mix of original and acquired programs.
Winfrey, talk-show host, producer and actress, is the chairman of HARPO Entertainment Group. She has an exclusive agreement to produce feature films for the Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group. Nominated for an Academy Award for her role in "The Color Purple," Winfrey starred in the recently released film "Beloved."
Carsey, Werner and Mandabach are the principals of the independent television company, Carsey-Werner. The company was founded in 1981 and its shows have included "Roseanne," "Cybill" and "Grace Under Fire." Other Carsey-Werner productions include "3rd Rock From the Sun" and "That 70's Show." Casey-Werner will commit programs from its library to Oxygen.
Carsey-Werner-Mandabach will program for the new cable network. HARPO will produce programming for Oxygen cable in the future and contribute its library when it becomes available.
Oxygen Media was founded earlier this year to provide branded content for women and children for the Internet, network and cable television and other media. Oxygen's online properties, available through AOL and the Internet, are Thrive, Moms Online and Electra.
