Management issues stall negotiations between Steinbrenner, Cablevision
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Negotiations to strike a deal for Cablevision Systems Corp. to purchase George Steinbrenner's majority stake in the New York Yankees broke off Tuesday because of management issues, a person familiar with the talks told CNNfn.
Cablevision, which owns the New York Knicks and New York Rangers sports teams, and Steinbrenner had been working out a $600-million deal for Steinbrenner's majority interest in the Yankees.
The deal would have left Steinbrenner with control of the team's day-to-day operations. The source wouldn't confirm whether negotiations have ended or if they're merely on hold.
Cablevision, the sixth-largest cable operator in the United States, also owns Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall. The company has a 12-year, $486-million contract to broadcast Yankees games until 2000.
Cablevision (CVC) shares fell 2-5/8 to close at 41-3/8 in Tuesday trading.
