Report: Firms discussing global voice, data, computer systems combination
|
LONDON (CNNfn) - MCI WorldCom and Electronic Data Systems are discussing a joint venture to provide a broad range of voice, data and computer systems services to global business customers.
MCI WorldCom (WCOM) is planning to turn over management of its internal billing and information systems to EDS (EDS), according to a report in the Washington Post Tuesday.
Quoting unnamed sources, the paper said as part of the deal EDS is considering purchasing part of MCI's business of creating complex computer systems for clients. MCI would then handle the communications needs of EDS customers.
Thousands of MCI employees would move over to EDS and many could lose their jobs, according to the Post. The company said last week it would lay off just under 3,750 of its 75,000 employees.
No agreement has been reached, but the Post said an announcement could come within two weeks.
