Internet media company inks deal to provide Web site for Super Bowl XXXIII

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - In an attempt to cash in on the media blitz that is the Super Bowl, Lycos has announced a deal with the National Football League to launch a revised Web site for the thirty-third playing of the big game.
     Lycos said it posted the site Wednesday and hopes to see as many as 30 million visitors by the time the site is pulled down a month after the Jan. 31 game. The Super Bowl has become one of the most important -- and expensive -- events of the year for advertisers.
     Jim Horsfall, Lycos' vice president of marketing, said he is confident the site will attract a broad segment of the Web surfing public, pulling in Net-savvy football fans and relative newbies alike. "It gives us a tremendous amount of reach," he said.
     With a market share of roughly 40 percent of the Internet audience, Lycos has been closely trailing Santa Clara-based Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) in the highly competitive portal business.
     The key difference between this year's site and last year's is that the Super Bowl XXXIII home page is a "portal" while last year's was a "destination" site. A portal site gives browsers access to other sites and usually has features like chat rooms and free e-mail. A destination site doesn't normally offer these features.
    
     Lycos plans a media assault to promote the new site, with tie-ins on TV sports shows preceding the game, links from the NFL site, and a commercial during the Super Bowl game.
     The NFL and Lycos will split the site's advertising and sales revenue, but Horsfall declined to comment on how much money might be made.
     The site will allow football fans to voice their opinions and communicate with other fans through chat rooms, message boards and other interactive features.
     Horsfall said the site's success will determine whether Lycos will do it again, since it is the first temporary site it has made.
     Lycos has built sites for such big name clients as music video channel VH1 and Viacom (VIA) Inc.'s Blockbuster Video. Back to top
