NHTSA reviewing complaints that car seats/carriers can collapse suddenly
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Federal officials are investigating two brands of car seats that double as baby carriers because of reports the seat handles can release unexpectedly.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday at least 20 children have been injured after falling out of Kolcraft Infant Rider, Cosco Arriva or Cosco Turn-About models.
NHTSA said it had received 37 complaints about the Cosco products, with reports of 9 injuries, and 82 complaints about the Kolcraft seat, with reports of 11 injuries.
NHTSA officials said the injuries weren't believed to be serious and there were no deaths reported.
The complaints claim the carriers can suddenly and unexpectedly unlatch while they are being carried by the handles.
An NHTSA spokesman said the investigation is continuing. Kolcraft Enterprises Inc., based in Chicago, nor Cosco Inc., based in Columbus, Ind., was available for comment. Cosco issued a statement from Jon Reynolds, executive vice president and general counsel, saying it is working on a retrofit part for Cosco Arriva and Turnabout car seat/carriers made before September 1997. The statement also said all of the units manufactured since that time have a redesigned handle that does not unlatch unexpectedly. The Consumer Product Safety Commission also has investigated the two companies' products.
