Internet shares soar again; chip stocks still riding high on analysts' optimism

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Internet shares led a strong tech rally Wednesday, while semiconductor-related stocks continued to post big gains amid analysts' optimism.
eBay Inc. spiked 59 to 283 amid its week-long auction of historic home-run balls hit by Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.
@Home Corp. shot up 16-1/8 to 96-3/8 after the high-speed Internet access provider announced it had awarded AT&T Corp. a contract to create a nationwide Internet protocol network.
Lycos Inc. jumped 13-5/8 to 66 after Credit Suisse First Boston initiated coverage of the Web portal with a "buy" rating.
Elsewhere, CMGI soared 30-9/32 to 151; Yahoo! Inc. leapt 33-1/8 to 291; Amazon.com Inc. rose 13-3/8 to 137-7/8; and Inktomi Corp. finished 19-3/4 higher at 158-7/8.
Shares of semiconductor-related firms continued their high-flying ways, still buoyed by analysts' optimism over the outlook for chip-equipment makers.
Novellus Systems Inc. jumped 7-1/2 to 66-1/16; Applied Materials Inc. added 3-13/16 to 53-9/16; and Lam Research Corp. rose 1-7/8 to 27-1/8.
Among chipmakers, Intel Corp. finished 6-1/4 higher at 129-1/2; Texas Instruments Inc. added 2-5/8 to 91-11/16; and Micron Technology Inc. rose 5-3/4 to 59-3/4.
Among hardware companies, Hewlett-Packard Co. rose 1-7/8 to 71-9/16 after announcing the creation of a new business unit to make sub-$100 inkjet printers.
Computer maker Dell Computer Corp. rose 2-7/8 to 78-1/8, though Apple Computer Inc. shed 1-9/16 to 41-3/4.
In the software sector, financial software maker Intuit Inc. rose 9-15/16 to 88-3/8 after releasing the latest versions of its tax-preparation software for the Windows and Macintosh platforms.
Elsewhere, Citrix Systems Inc. climbed 3-3/4 to 93-7/8; Oracle Corp. added 2-1/16 to 46-3/8; and Microsoft Corp. rose 4-3/4 to 151-1/4.
Among telecom shares, SkyTel Communications Inc. rose 1-7/8 to 22-7/8 after Microsoft divulged it has acquired a 5.7-percent stake in the paging company.
Finally, Lucent Technologies Inc. rose 3-1/16 to 117-3/16 after unveiling a new chip for cordless phones.
