America Online teams with Baby Bell to offer high-speed Internet access

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - American Online, the nation's leading online service provider, is pairing up with local phone service company Bell Atlantic to provide high-speed access to its customers.
Under the agreement, AOL (AOL) will begin offering Bell Atlantic's Infospeed Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) access later this summer as a premium upgrade for AOL members in the Bell Atlantic (BEL) service area.
The DSL technology will become available to 7.5 million homes by the end of 1999. That number will nearly double to more than 14 million by the end of 2000.
The DSL feature will provide AOL members with high-speed bandwidth to their personal computers over existing telephone wires. At a typical speed of up to 640 kilobits per second, DSL access will be more than 20 times faster than the standard 28.8 kbps modems.
The exact cost of the service hasn't been determined, but it's expected to cost AOL members less than $20 more per month.
Shares of AOL were down 11-5/8 Wednesday morning at 142 on the New York Stock Exchange. Bell Atlantic was off 7/16 at 53-5/16.
