NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Microsoft Corp. said Monday it plans to ship the final test version of its long-awaited Windows 2000 operating system upgrade two to four weeks behind schedule.
The Redmond, Wash.-based software titan will now ship the Windows 2000 beta in mid-to late April to ensure the product's quality. The company originally planned to have the final test version ready by the end of March.
Windows 2000 is an upgrade to Microsoft 's (MSFT) Windows NT operating system, which is geared toward corporate networks. The company has been promoting Windows 2000 as the operating system of choice for businesses, whereas Windows 98 is geared for consumers.
With Windows 2000, Microsoft hopes to tap into the high-end corporate market dominated by the Unix operating system.
Microsoft is also counting on Windows 2000, which it plans to ship officially later this year, to provide a big boost to its already robust revenues. The company charges $319 for Windows NT Workstation, compared with $209 for Windows 98.
Microsoft is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings results Tuesday. Analysts expect the company to report a profit of 59 cents a share, according to First Call.
Microsoft shares closed up 8 at 149-3/4 in Friday trade. Back to top
