Venture with AOL's CompuServe to offer local access for $16.95 a month

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The MCI name will be linked to the Internet again, as parent company MCI WorldCom Thursday confirmed an agreement with America Online's CompuServe for local online access.
Under terms of the agreement, which was alluded to by a company official Wednesday, 150 hours of the new service will be available to existing MCI WorldCom subscribers for $16.95 a month. The site's portal will be customized by CompuServe and will feature news, information, stock quotes and access to a version of the Instant Messenger real-time chat service.
MCI WorldCom customers who receive the service will be able to get both Internet access and long-distance services on one bill. They'll also be able to earn mileage in frequent flyer programs that are partners with the telecommunications company.
"We have combined the power and reliability of our network and our highly valued airline partnerships with the dynamic content and communications tools of CompuServe, a proven online brand with a track record in helping busy people get the most of their Internet experience," says MCI WorldCom consumer marketing executive John Donoghue.
MCI had branded online access until it was forced to sell it as part of its acquisition by WorldCom, which was completed last September.
MCI WorldCom stock was down 1-1/16 to 77 in Thursday morning trading. AOL shares were down 3-1/2 to 169-15/16.
