NEW YORK (CNNfn) - U.S. stocks finished the day mixed Tuesday, as investors focused on a rally in the bond market and continued to show signs of concern over valuations in the technology sector.
According to preliminary data, the Dow Jones industrial average closed 16.74 points higher at 9,291.63. On the New York Stock Exchange, declines beat advances by a small margin of 1,546 to 1,512 on trading volume of 645 million shares.
The Nasdaq Composite, hurt again by weakness in the technology sector, shed 7.97 to 2,313.92. The S&P 500 index finished 11.20 higher at 1,241.33.
Bonds finished the day mostly higher, with longer issues staging a solid rally, while the short end of the yield curve softened at the end of the trading session. The benchmark 30-year Treasury bond closed 1-1/32 points higher in price for a yield of 5.35 percent.
The dollar extended its strong overnight gains against the yen but finished slightly lower against the euro.
