Chip maker reportedly will give away chip, systems blueprints to spur growth
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Computer hardware maker Sun Microsystems reportedly plans to license its microprocessor designs free to other developers.
In a practice long familiar in the software field but an apparent first among chip and systems makers, Sun (SUNW) plans simply to give the blueprints of its microprocessor technology to developers who couldn't normally afford its fees, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
Analysts praised Sun's move for its effect on promoting growth and perhaps better technology. By eliminating licensing fees, the Palo Alto, Calif., firm told the Journal, it hopes to pen its audience to innovators like start-ups and academics who may in turn create new products.
Those licensing the technology will be free to modify it. They face fees only if they use the designs commercially, the Journal said.
