NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Spooked by the altitude and by some significant profit warnings, investors abandoned the pursuit of Dow 10,000 for a day Friday, content to focus on consolidating their market positions.
According to preliminary data, the Dow Jones industrial average finished the day 21.09 points lower at 9,876.35, leaving 10,000 as a goal to be achieved, perhaps in the very near future.
The Nasdaq Composite fell 30.70 points, or 1.3 percent, to 2,381.55. The S&P 500 index lost 3.09 to 1,294.59.
Bonds rose, encouraged by the day's economic report -- a non-inflationary producer price index report for February. The benchmark 30-year Treasury bond gained 17/32 of a point in price, for a yield of 5.52 percent.
The dollar fell sharply against the yen, but regained some ground against the euro.
