Toronto, Montreal close slightly higher, while Vancouver dips moderately

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Toronto stocks closed the day slightly higher on Tuesday as stronger base metal stocks pulled the market higher while slumping bullion values weighed on precious metal miners.
The Toronto Stock Exchange's key 300 Composite Index finished higher by 13.8 points, or 0.21 percent, at 6619.80.
"I think the action in gold is telling because it's symptomatic of a lack of follow-through that we're probably going to see in the back end of the market," said Gerald Vincent, vice president of Davis-Rea Ltd. Investment Counsel.
"There has been some hope that end of the market was going to revive: oils, base metals, precious metals etc. and I don't think there's enough evidence to suggest that and I think gold is leading that in terms of being a bellwether sentiment in the whole area," Vincent said.
Elsewhere in the region, stocks in Montreal also finished slightly higher. The benchmark Portfolio also rose 5.01, or 0.14 percent, to 3524.60. And in Vancouver, the Composite retreated 1.35 points, or 0.32 percent, to 424.6.
