United Airlines' parent picks popular veteran as new chairman & CEO

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - UAL Corp. said Thursday directors chose popular veteran James E. Goodwin to be the new chairman and chief executive officer.
Goodwin, 54, is currently president and chief operating officer. He will take over his new position in July, succeeding Gerald Greenwald, who has been chairman and CEO since 1994. UAL Corp. (UAL) is the parent company of United Airlines.
Goodwin joined United in 1967 and has worked in almost every management department, including finance, maintenance and marketing.
"Jim brings to the table a rare combination of hands-on experience, judgment and leadership," Greenwald said in a statement.
Earlier this month, UAL cut its list of candidates down to Goodwin and Louis Hughes, GM's executive vice president for business strategies, whose old job was eliminated in a reshuffling late last year.
"I am honored by the board's confidence and deeply appreciative of the trust and support I have received from my fellow employees," Goodwin said in the statement. "United has come a very long way since Jerry Greenwald took over in mid-1994. Our prospects are greater than ever before and the competition is greater than ever before."
UAL Corp. closed higher by 3-5/16 at 76-13/16 in trading Thursday.
