Internet provider seeks to tap under-served U.S. Hispanic market
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Prodigy Communications said Tuesday it will launch a Spanish-language Internet service in a bid to grab an untapped market.
The Internet provider isn't the first to supply online content for Spanish speakers. America Online offers Spanish-language access in Mexico and Argentina and Yahoo! and New York-based StarMedia provide their Spanish content in Latin America.
But White Plains, N.Y.-based Prodigy (PRGY) says it will have the first national Spanish Internet service in an effort to reach eight million Latino households.
"We have the expertise to provide the Latino market with the Internet power and resources it needs and is ready to use," said David Trachtenberg, president and chief operating officer of Prodigy.
Under the service, technical and customer support will be in Spanish. Users can switch instantly between Spanish and English home pages. News, sports scores, weather, links and online shopping all will be geared to Spanish speakers.
Stock of Prodigy, which launched an IPO in February, gained 1-9/16 Tuesday to close at 39-1/4 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
