Worn gear in front seat of '94-'95 models runs risk of crash, NHTSA says

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Saturn is recalling 136,300 cars because the front seat may unexpectedly slip into a reclining position, the nation's traffic safety agency said Tuesday.
In its recall report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall affects cars made in 1994 and 1995.
The NHTSA said recliner gear teeth, which hold up the front seat backs, may wear down through excessive use and cause those seats to slip rearward when force is applied.
Such a slippage increases the likelihood a driver could crash, the agency said in a report.
Saturn is a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors (GM), a Dow component, whose shares rose 1-1/2 to 84-5/8 Tuesday.
A spokesman for Saturn was not immediately available to comment.
