Technology firms seek to provide 'unprecedented' wireless availability
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Motorola Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc. Wednesday signed a 10-year, non-exclusive technology agreement to provide high-access wireless network equipment.
The agreement calls for Motorola to purchase up to $1 billion in software and hardware from Sun Microsystems and Motorola subsidiaries -- creating what company officials called an "unprecedented" level of wireless availability, or the equivalent of a near-infinite dial tone using wire-based telephone systems.
The new networks will allow wireless service providers and commercial developers to respond quickly to demands for IP-based voice, data and video services, the companies said.
The network architecture will be deployed by Motorola businesses that design and manufacture wireless network infrastructure products for satellite, paging, two-way radio and Internet networking customers.
The two firms also plan to independently offer their software and hardware architectures developed for the networks to other telecommunications and enterprise customers.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based Sun (SUNW) will develop the software for the new networks while Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola (MOT) subsidiaries will design the architecture's hardware and wireless communications platforms.
Motorola stock closed Tuesday at 84-1/16, down 1-13/16. Sun Microsystems finished at 59-3/16, up 1-1/2.
