Wall Street Journal retains Creative Artists Agency to represent articles
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Think that Wall Street Journal bond market article would translate well to the big screen? Then you better talk to their agent.
Creative Artists Agency (CAA), the powerful Beverly Hills talent agency previously founded in 1975 by Michael Ovitz, Ron Meyer and other agents, will represent the Journal's articles for film and television projects.
The Journal, like many papers, has continually dealt with calls from studios looking to purchase rights to articles, but has now decided to let CAA handle those inquiries and pitch stories too.
Interest in the Journal's stories has, "varied a lot from first-person to human interest, to the occasional business story," according to Dow Jones & Co. (DJ) spokesman Dick Tofel.
While the paper has previously sold the rights to articles, none of those have been made into films.
In most cases the writer received a percentage of the sale and that arrangement is expected to continue, Tofel said. The amount of the percentage varied on a case-by-case basis.
Ovitz, who left CAA for Disney (DIS), is now running a new talent agency, Artists Management Group. Meyer left CAA to become president and chief operating officer of Universal Studios.
