Report: Ex-Citibank exec, deterred by heart problem, could retain job
|
LONDON (CNNfn) - Barclays Bank, still searching for someone to fill its vacant chief executive's seat, could return to its first choice, ex-Citibank executive Michael O'Neill, according to a newspaper report Friday.
O'Neill never actually took up the job after serious heart problems were discovered in the week leading up to his first day in the office.
The Daily Mail reported Friday that O'Neill is now expecting the all-clear from his doctors, and could finally assume the helm at Barclays.
"I would love the job. It's not impossible, though there are a lot of hurdles that need to be cleared." O'Neill was quoted as telling the Daily Mail.
Barclays refused to comment on the report, although a spokeswoman did say the search for a new boss was going well, and "we're under no pressure to make a snap decision".
The newspaper reported that the blackouts which O'Neill's doctors diagnosed as a potentially life-threatening condition were now seen as a temporary reaction to a severe dose of flu.
Sources said O'Neill, a former U.S. Marine, and Barclays Chairman Peter Middleton, who is filling the chief executive role on an interim basis, have remained on friendly terms and in frequent contact since the surprising news of the executive's medical condition.
