Online services enter four-year, $89M strategic alliance
|
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - America Online said Tuesday it has formed a four-year strategic alliance with online health information and services provider drkoop.com under which AOL will offer health content across its five brands beginning in the fall.
Under the terms of the deal, drkoop.com (KOOP), which went public at the beginning of June, will pay AOL $89 million over the four years and AOL (AOL) will receive fully vested, performance-based warrants to purchase shares in drkoop.com.
In return, drkoop.com will become a top health content partner across AOL brands, which reach more than 19 million members plus millions of visitors to AOL.com, Netscape Netcenter and Digital City.
According to Media Metrix, as of April, drkoop.com had 1.4 million unique visitors, and AOL's Health Channel received 2 million unique users.
Drkoop.com, led by former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop, will also use AOL's sales force to build advertising and e-commerce opportunities on drkoop.com and its affiliate sites, the companies said.
drkoop.com, which offers users consumer-focused health care news and services and access to other health-related resources, is already the exclusive provider of health content for three Web sites on the Walt Disney Co.-Infoseek-backed GO network, including GO Health Center, and is a leading provider of health information for GO's ABCnews.com.
AOL shares closed Friday at 115-1/4, up 3-1/8. drkoop.com stock closed at 23-5/8, up 5-7/16.
