'Shark' data system intended to compete with EMC's high-end products

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - IBM unveiled a disk storage system Monday that marks the computer maker's return to the high-end data storage market.
The IBM Enterprise Storage Server, or ESS, dubbed the "Shark" system, is the company's flagship entry into this segment of the computer hardware market. IBM abandoned the market three years ago amid competition from EMC Corp. (EMC)
IBM touted the system as cutting-edge.
"While other storage suppliers attempt to eke out new functionality from aging storage architectures, the ESS offers customers real choices when designing an enterprise storage infrastructure for the future," said Ron Kilpatrick, general manager of IBM's storage systems division.
The new system was developed at a cost believed to run in the hundreds of millions of dollars, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
The product is expected to hit the market in September, the newspaper said.
Shares in IBM, a component of the Dow industrials, closed up 15/16 to 124-13/16 Friday.
