NEW YORK (CNNfn) - A lackluster session on Wall Street ended with a small blue chip rally in the last hour of trading, even as investors cautiously awaited the following day's release of the latest consumer inflation data.
According to preliminary data, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 73.14 points to 11,046.79. Market breadth on the New York Stock Exchange was negative, however, with declines ahead of advances by 1,552 to 1,394 on trading volume of 582 million shares, one of the lightest trading days of the year.
The Nasdaq Composite rose 7.46 to 2,645.27 and the S&P 500 index inched up 3.09 to 1,330.77.
Bonds also finished with modest gains, with the bellwether 30-year Treasury bond rising 3/32 of a point in price, its yield drifting down to 6.09 percent, off slightly from 6.10 percent at the close Friday.
The dollar fell sharply against the yen and finished slightly lower against the euro.
