NEW YORK (CNNfn) - DaimlerChrysler is recalling more than 2 million older-model minivans because of problems that have already resulted in some minor damage and injury, the automaker announced Monday.
DaimlerChrysler (DCX) said it's recalling some 1.4 million 1991- through 1993-model Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan and Plymouth minivans that may have a mechanical problem with the windshield wipers that causes them to stop working. It has also sent notices to an additional 743,000 1996-model minivan owners to correct a possible problem with the gas tank that could prompt a fire.
It's the second major recall on minivans announced by the Auburn Hills, Mich.-based motor company in less than four months. In late May DaimlerChrysler issued a recall for nearly 1 million 1994- and 1995-model minivans because of driver's side air bags that were unintentionally deploying.
The cars being inspected for the windshield problem will also be looked at for a potential problem with the bolts on the hydraulic strut that hold up the rear door -- a problem DaimlerChrysler said it began addressing in an earlier recall. Several customers were injured when the lift gate lost support and slammed shut, the company said.
The other vehicles being inspected for the gas tank problem -- 1996-model Town & Country, Caravan and Voyager minivans -- will have a bolt securing the fuel pump to the gas tank replaced. DaimlerChrysler said it received six reports of small underbody fires, which led it to investigate the problem and issue the recall. No injuries were reported with that particular problem.
Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail next month and advised to call their dealers to schedule service appointments. The repairs will be made at no cost to customers.
Separately, DaimlerChrysler said it plans to sell about $3.25 billion of bonds in its debut global offering. The company is expected to sell $1 billion of five-year notes, $1.5 billion of 10-year notes and $750 million of three-year floating-rate notes.
The deal is expected to be priced either Monday or Tuesday through lead managers Credit Suisse First Boston and Salomon Smith Barney, according to syndicate officials.
DaimlerChrysler's American Depository Receipts fell 11/16 to 76-13/16. DaimlerChrysler was created last year from the merger of Daimler-Benz and Chrysler Corp.Back to top
